Several top clubs from Major League Soccer and Liga MX will fancy their chances at lifting the 2024 Leagues Cup.
Even though we’re a little over three months until this summer’s Leagues Cup kicks-off, there’s never a bad time to go and see which of the top teams across the continent will more than likely be favorites heading into the tournament. The usual suspects crack the list with the likes of Club America and Inter Miami, while dark horses like Cruz Azul and LA Galaxy sneak into the ranking after their impressive league campaigns in 2024.
Here’s 90min’s ranking of the favorites to take home the 2024 Leagues Cup.
LAFC have been quite inconsistent to begin their 2024 MLS season but that doesn’t mean they can’t turn up when it matters most. With reigning Golden Boot winner Denis Bouanga in the side, the Black and Gold will always feel they have a chance with the electric Gabon international.
Unlike their rivals LAFC, LA Galaxy have been one of the most consistent sides to start the 2024 campaign. With Riqui Puig leading the way alongside new signings Joseph Paintsil and Gabriel Pec, the Gs will be a team to look out for when Leagues Cup begins this summer.
Philadelphia Union’s approach to games sets them up for success this summer in Leagues Cup. While some sides choose to play the possession-based, easy on the eyes soccer, the Union’s counter-attacking methods will make them hard to beat with the likes of Daniel Gazdag and Julian Carranza springing forward on the counter.
Plenty of eyes have been on Chivas after their signing of 20-year-old Cade Cowell from San Jose Earthquakes earlier this winter. Cowell has shown flashes here and there, and he just might have a chip on his shoulder when Chivas take on his old club, San Jose Earthquakes, in the Group Stage before hopefully making a deep run in the competition.
Like the Galaxy, Cruz Azul are another side that could very well be considered as a dark horse. The Mexican outfit have experienced a resurgence in the 2024 Clausura led by Uriel Antuna, and they’re more than capable of pulling off an upset or two along the way.
At 39-years-old, Andre-Pierre Gignac continues to lead the line and bang in the goals for Tigres. The veteran Frenchman, along with Francisco Cordova and Juan Brunetta, post a threat to any defense that has Leagues Cup aspirations.
Columbus Crew have emerged as one of the best sides in North America under Wilfried Nancy, who guided the Eastern Conference team to an MLS Cup in his first season in charge in 2023. With the dynamic duo of Cucho Hernandez and Diego Rossi, the Crew will no doubt head into the competition as one of the favorites.
Inter Miami were always going to be considered favorites with the legendary Lionel Messi in the side. With Luis Suarez added up front and Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba keeping things in check on the back-end, the Herons will look to do everything possible to go back-to-back as Leagues Cup champions.
CF Monterrey continue to prove why they’re one of the top sides in North America with Brandon Vazquez and German Berterame performing as the ultimate strike partnership. Sergio Canales continues to pull the strings from the midfield and will hope to lead Rayados to glory in his second Leagues Cup with the Mexican giants.
There was simply no way Club America weren’t going to end up at the top of the list. As Julian Quinones and Henry Martin pave the way for the Eagles, they’ll hope to perform much better this time around and take home the coveted trophy.
